Bringing Neon City to Wichita Falls
We at 9th Street Studios are SO incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to bring the sculpture “Neon City” to Wichita Falls!
The final installation was completed in June 2023 and the sculpture can be seen at the end of Lamar Street, behind the MPEC.
This opportunity was made possible through our relationship with Ingrid Spencer, Executive Director of Austin Chapter AIA and Constance Y. White, Manager of Austin Art in Public Places
How it Started…
9th Street Studios retrieved Neon City from MetalWorks Austin just in time to debut in Wichita Falls during the 2022 City Lights Parade. The black-light reactive art installation’s temporary location was provided by our frequent partners, White Realty, in the storefront of 813 8th Street (the Oil and Gas building.)
Finding a Permanent Place…
In the process of finding a permanent home, executing an ambitious installation, and making the necessary repairs to the sculpture, 9th Street enlisted the expertise of community partners: Wichita Falls Alliance for Arts and Culture, B.C. Gilbert & WF Career Education Center Welding Department, Wichita Falls Parks Department, and Fuago.
about thE sculpture:
Neon City was one of several temporary art installations created for the 2022 Creek Show in the Waterloo Greenway of Austin, Texas. Neon City is an abstract representation of Austin’s downtown skyline on Waller Creek. The exhibition portrays the city’s colorful and vibrant energy that can be appreciated across Lady Bird Lake, watching the lights of downtown and its reflection in the water. As the city expands, these building blocks represent the growth and potential opportunities as Austin becomes an ever-evolving city that creates opportunities for more people to come together as a community.
